If the digital is the right kind of shape and size, he might just try
holding it upside down to take the photo, and use his thumb to press
the shutter release. And rotate all his photos.

Earlier this year, my husband got me the sanyo c6 as a present (he
meant well, poor thing). It might or might not work for your friend,
since the viewing screen would have to be popped up. Maybe he could
just leave it in place and press the on/off button when he wants to
use it.
