I don't know about the 18-55, though I have heard it is a decent performer from people whose opinions I have come to repect. I am willing to carry several lenses, to the point I only have one zoom lens, and wouldn't have it if I could have gotten a 10mm lens from Pentax. Some things are worth a little pain. Pretty much any Pentax lens will work on any Pentax DSLR, from screw mount on up to the most modern. You will get metering with all of them AFAIK, though non A lenses use a stop down AE metering method.
