I just wanted to add to this "on a scanner with poor dynamic range."

Like I said before, my neg results are superior for ISO 400 and above using a 
Polaroid Sprintscan 120.  Neg results are total crap from my Epson 3200 flatbed.

If you have a good scanner and standardize your process, i.e. get your film 
processed at the same lab, preferably a consistent one, and use the same film 
or group of films (the Fuji N series are nice and consistent) the majority of 
your work only needs to be done once.

So to get the full dynamic range out of the
image, the scanner is working in a relatively small range of light
levels coming through the film. That's why it looks grainer.
