I've looked at this a couple of times - trying to decide my feelings. The look of the girl holding the cane is very penetrating - the look of the lady on the right (mother?) seems a half hearted patronizing smile. Quite contrasting - and maybe that keeps me looking at it. It is almost as if it were two different photos in one.
