It's quite substantial and locks up tight enough to support your weight as a hiking staff. A fluid head with a round QR plate allows for fast vertical shooting. It has three steel rods that store in the base and screw into the bottom to create a "tripod" or light stand, or two screw into the top to make a very sturdy low angle tripod. I doubt that any heavy lens would be too taxing for it.
