You could leave the jpegs shot by the canon on the card but you need the 
correct directory structure.  Formating the card in the Pentax will 
automatically fill it in. 

If you have a card reader you can add the directories you need after 
formating the card in the other camera, if you really want to.

For example both the Pentax *ist-D and Ds use this structure

\DCIM\100PENTX

The picture files will be stored in the 100PENTX directory.

My Kodak DC260 has a directory structure like this.
\DC260_01
\SYSTEM

That camera stores the Picture files in the DC260_01 directory by 
default, though you can set up alternate "albums".
The system directory holds scripts that can alter the camera operations 
and menus.

If I add the Pentax directory structure that card the *ist-D simply puts 
it's pictures in the proper directory and ignores the Kodak directories 
and vice versa.  In a way it's pretty neat, but I haven't really come up 
with a real use for the behavior.
