Something very simple to clean up the clutter is to right click on the desktop, when the fly out menu appears uncheck the box for "shoe desktop icon." Bada-bing the clutter is gone but you can bring the icons back should you so desire.
I made a folder called Shortcuts, and put all the icons and shortcuts into it. The only thing on my desktop is the shortcuts folder and the trash can, one in each lower corner.
