Manual exposure too. Well, the camera is set to manual exposure and
the flash is on E-TTL (for Canon, y'know) automatic, with appropriate
compensation. He sets the aperture he wants and the lowest reasonable
hand-holdable shutter speed and lets the flash fill in the difference.
After working two jobs with him I came to the conclusion that he had
the right way of doing things. Worked well with my ist-D and P-TTL
flash.
Sure - I use my flash setup that way all the time, but for quick grabs,
the AF is lightning fast, even in room lighting. If it's too dark for
the AF, I certainly would switch to manual. Not all candids require
flash though, and some of the better ones indeed would be spoiled by
flash. Well, I guess we'll have to beg to differ.

Gotta agree with Cotty here. When I had my EOS 3 (Same AF as the
1v/1D/1Ds) the AF was ridiculously fast and accurate, even in low light
(And I'm talking 1/10 second at f4 at ISO 6400 low light). And it's the
only camera with Auto AF point selection that would consistently pick
the right points.
