like it could save a fair amount of work.

Just converting without adjusting does not make sense. You are not using the
potential of raw shooting.

At first I struggled a lot with this myself. (In fact, I still do, but my
skills have improved).

RSE has a neat feature that will get you going pretty fast. You can simply
use the Alt + E keys, and viola, RSE suggests adjustments based on some kind
of picture analysing. The suggestions are not perfect, but in many cases
they are ok. And in most cases it will give you a rough idea on what to do.
After a bit of fine tuning it usually ends up pretty good.

Off course, the best thing is to do it all by yourself, but why not get a
bit of help? It sure speeds things up.
