Many American cities are close together. If you count the suburbs where commuters live, New York and Philadelphia almost touch. Ditto New York and Boston. But that's beside the point. Part of the American psyche depends heavily on mobility and freedom of movement. Before we solve the problem of how to live closer to the things we need and want, we will undoubtedly solve the problem of how to travel at a reasonable cost. The same can probably be said for Canadians.

Part of southern Ontario is pretty congested, out west the cities are pretty spread out. The nearest city to me (other than the one of 180,000 lost souls that is called Regina) is 250km away, the nearest larger cities are 500km east or 800km west, and aren't big cities by American standards.
