I didn't mean to sound critical of your post Shel. I agree that the proprietary formats are a bad thing for the photographer and photography in general.
I'm a big fan of DNG and convert my raw files immediately. There's a couple of reasons. First of all, with Adobe's clout, I think DNG will eventually be the PDF of Raw files. PDF is one of the few file formats I can count on using anywhere. I'm guessing DNG will eventually have the same reach. Second, when I make edits with Adobe's raw converter, the changes are stored within the DNG file and I don't need to deal with those XMP sidecar files anymore. As a side issue, the very recent release of version 4 of Picture Window Pro now includes a raw converter. The first public beta didn't handle DNG files well. The initial response (and Digital Light and Color is an extremely responsive company) was that they were considering adding DNG as a format and may do it at a future time. They received customer feedback that many of us immediately convert to DNG and don't use the original proprietary Raw files. Within a few days DNG was supported. I think this is a story that will be repeating itself quite often in the future. I don't care so much that a product doesn't support PEF as long as it supports DNG. The DNG converter supports PEF so all is fine.
