The typical English landscape is a patchwork of fields enclosed by drystone walls, or hedges. But enclosure is associated with the loss of common rights and the driving of small farmers and poor people off the land, and into the cities and factories at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. This concentrated land ownership in the hands of people who were already wealthy and powerful, and helped to create the class divisions in this country.
