------------ Pursuing the suggestions posted here, I changed the color space to sRGB, and checked the "ICC Profile" box in the control panel that choosing "Save for Web" brings up. The "Save for Web" images, on both the left and right sides of the screen, are still considerably brighter and less contrasty than the psd source images.
