Our ice-cream man plays "The Happy Wanderer". The Museum of Mankind has an option to take his skin when he dies, it has such a interesting variety of tattoos on it. I think the different songs help identify which street gang currently owns the concession. Somebody ought to do a compilation album of ice cream van music. Parents could play it to torture their kids. Or vice versa. When I was a kid in Singapore we didn't have an ice cream man. Instead we had the mi-mi man. He sold a fruit called rambutan from a large box. He came strolling down the dirt track in his bare feet, banging 2 hollow pieces of wood together so that they made a loud clacking noise. He shouted 'Mi-mi! Mi-mi!' and we would pester our mother for a couple of cents, then run down the road to buy a bag of mi-mis. After we left Singapore I didn't see a rambutan for about 25 years, and I had no idea that's what mi-mis are called, but I kept the memory of how delicious they are. When I first saw one again, in a supermarket in London, I was absolutely thrilled. They cost a helluva lot more than a couple of cents now, but they are still delicious. Much nicer than ice-cream chemical glop. Bob
