I think we've all been there, Dave. Katrin Eismann suggested a simple workflow that reduces the chance of such things happening. For each photo you work on create a directory structure. There's the main directory for the image, in this case we'll call it Sepia_IR. Below that are directories for Original, Work_in_Progress, Final, and, in this case, Web. Always keep the original in it's folder, do the work in the WIP folder, saving various iterations of the file, when you're satisfied with the results, save them in the Final folder (including layers, etc.) with a different extension than the WIP files (one being a TIFF the other a PSD, for example), and then the one used for the web or printing in the last folder. I know it's a bit of a pain, but it keeps everything organized, you can always go back to exactly the place you want to, and it enforces a more disciplined approach - which I need, anyway.
