Scott,

I also have had some trouble with pre-carple tunnel symptoms. My solution right now (besides the physical therapy) has been to utilize different pointing devices depending on where i am. In my work office, I have a USB Microsoft Trackball (the kind controlled by your thumb). In my home office, I have another trackball controlled by the fingers. Most of the rest of the time I use the trackpad on my G4. Other computers I use have the standard 2 button mice. This seems to work for me most of the time, though occasionally, I still have spasms.

I seemed to develop this condition from using the nipple type mouse built into my old Compaq laptop. It seems the key is to continue to switch how you are using your hand and give yoruself breaks.

The trackpoint nipples are my second choice. Mice and the trackpads
are way down the list. I like trackballs. I have two Logitech Marble
Mouse trackballs - one for work and one for home. A few years ago I
suffered from a bit of carpal tunnel, so I switched to the trackball.
No more carpal tunnel!

My favorite laptop is a Compaq Contura 410C. Some of you may remember
this little monstrosity. It was the first Compaq to have a color
screen. Manufactured in 1995, mine still works and runs Slackware.
No GUI. For the pointing device - a trackball.

To each their own. Buy lots of them and enjoy.

My reaction when forced to work on a computer with one is to turn it
off and plug in a mouse. Happily, only Windows systems that I will
never own have them.
