Note that that article only refers to certain hardware systems. Win98,
in general, *does* support USB. Heck, I ran USB in Win95 OSR 2!
The real problem is that most devices need dedicated drivers to
connect to Win98 through USB and no one's writing these drivers any
more. I had a laptop still running Win98 when I first got my ist-D and
I had to get a card reader to connect via USB because there were no
ist-D drivers for Win98 to allow me to connect the camera directly to
the computer. (I'd use a card reader for file downloading anyway, but
the real issue was being able to use Pentax Remote Assistant.)

Plenty of card readers do have Win98 USB drivers.
