The camera can use the information to make sure the flash will reach the
subject. The camera might use the information to improve/fine tune matrix
metering.
By the way, according to the KMP, F-lenses already communicate distance
information. FA lenses only added mtf-data (individually determined for
each lens, according to rumour), and of course powerzoom on some zooms.

Some years ago I've been confirmed by a Pentax designer that FA lenses
have
more advanced electronics, telling the camera the focusing distance
(among
other things). That's the reason for having FA-series prime lenses.
