Subject: Keeping a lens level

I have a fairly good tripod (a Slik butI can't remember the model number)
which has a pan-tilt head.

The problem is that it's difficult to keep long lenses level. The longest
I have a 80-320 zoom and the front end of the lens sags when mounted
on the tripod and left along.

Is there some decent solution e.g. would it help to use a ballhead?
I don't want to spend several hundred dollars either.

Suggestions will be much appreciated.

If you can balance the camera and lens better, then that would be a good thing to do. Put the camera on a balance bar which is long enough to bring the camera body back to the balance point when it is mounted.
