Umm Bob, didn't the Contarex have the aperture and rear lens group
in the body, and the lens was a just a barrel with glass?

No. That's the Contaflex, which was considered an amateur camera.
The Contarex accepted a wide range of fully interchangeable lenses.
It was during the late days of the Contarex that Carl Zeiss and Asahi
Optical formed a working relationship that led to the development of
multicoating. A few of the very late Contarex lenses were T*
multicoated.
The Contarex Super Electronic offered electronically timed shutter
speeds, aperture-priority auto exposure ( with an accessory), motor
drive, and interchangeable backs that allowed you to change in mid
roll without losing an exposure, all in 1968. I used the Contarex
system professionally in the early 70s.
