you know what, my honest opinion in this situation is the kids want to have 
and use what we have and use.  if we try telling them we "kind of evolved" 
to this automation what they are looking and the simple basics of 
photography start from those simple camera, they would believe only if we 
use those kind of camera in front of them - thinking, talking about it.

my wife has pentax point and shoot for simplicity and i have minolta x-700 
for quite a long time with 28-105 lens.  but one point of time i moved to 
n90s as minolta lenses were not interchangeable as far as autofocus is 
concerned and never used x-700 again.... result ? my daughter at 11 wants 
either pentax point and shoot or n90s.
