You can't sell cameras if they aren't available to sell. A potential buyer
will be easily swayed to another brand if the product is not available.
That bodes ill, not well, as with less than 10% of the DSLR market, Pentax
really can't afford to lose sales. If Pentax can see a camera is selling
well and the volume of that model in the supply chain is shrinking, some
foresight dictates that they ramp up to keep the supply constant. A
customer purchasing another brand, will likely send more business the
non-Pentax direction in the way of lens purchases.
I question why I don't see a single Pentax DSLR at my local Best Buy,
Circuit City, CompUSA, and Costco. Nikons, Canons, and even Minolta abound.
I don't think it's because they sold out.

I think the DS and DS2 are great cameras. I bought one. Now, after

out less than a year, the DS2 has become scarce as hen's teeth. That is
~frustrating~ especially since I don't know if the camera has been
discontinued, if there's just a slowdown in delivery, or what. Even the
sites listed on the Pentax web site don't have the DS2 - lots of DL's
though.
That just means that it's selling well and vendors are having difficulty
keeping them in stock. Sales personnel at the local dealer, although they
sell Nikon and Canon far more than any other brands, tells me that the
shop has had no problems selling *ist DS/DL/ DS2 bodies and Pentax lenses.
There are no longer *any* used Pentax lenses of any note in stock.
To me, that sound like Pentax is doing well. We all know they don't have
the kind of production capability that Nikon or Canon do, so some
unevenness in availability of units is to be expected. Even Canon and
Nikon buyers occasionally can't get a particular thing they want
instantly.
