I often find it more difficult to make critical focus adjustments with a short lens and AF than to focus entirely manually, using the transitions technique.

And I have to have some focal length between 18 and 43, don't I?

If you adamantly refuse to buy a DA16-45 (a very good lens even though I wasn't particularly thrilled with its size and weight), you can go for my favorite ... the FA20-35/4 AL ... in a zoom or the FA28/2.8 AL in a prime. I've heard too many different testimonials about the FA24/2, aside from its size, weight and price ... the A24 seems a more consistent, better performer.

I find the FA20-35 to be a little easier to focus manually than the A24 ... think I said that before ... because it has better wide-open contrast.
