I hesitate to say it on this list, and I hope Tom C isn't reading, but to me the fact that Pentax is opening a new lens factory is excellent news. It also suggests that the recent lens shortages have not been due to a lack of interest in the photo market, but to a simple lack of capacity.

There has been considerable talk on this list about Pentax's reduced profitability in recent years. Profitability ebbs and flows in an industry such as this, but it's worth remembering that a lack of profits never made anybody go broke. It's running out of cash that makes companies go broke, and Pentax's balance sheet, like that of many old family firms, is very strong. That's why they can afford to open a new factory, and why they can weather a few lean years.

I'm raising a glass tonight.

John

I remember that announcement, but... has anyone ever seen one of those cameraphones outside Korea? I suspect Pentax is manufacturing something else for reaching 1 million lenses a month.

BTW, 1 million lenses (to become 1.6 million lenses)
include P&S, CCTV and
cameraphones. Which cameraphones?
