Does anyone have any experiences (good and/or bad) to report regarding
KatzEye screens (besides price, which is not a "good") ?

I should know in a few days - I ordered one on Monday.

Will definitely report back with results. There's a thread about this on DPReview as well. Seems a hot topic these days!

Oh my goodness.

It arrived yesterday, precisely 1 week after ordering. (Standard available Pentax "Plus" screen with the split prism, microprism collar, and no extra lines/brightness enhancements).

I went downstairs to the Quickie-Mart and bought a tweezers, came back upstairs, and had the screen swapped in about 30 seconds. Not as scary as I thought it would be.

The results? Great!

I don't know if the screen is any brighter or not on the ground-glass part... but the microprism ring practically glows like it is illuminated!

When I got home, I did some test shots in the house, lit only by a pair of 60-watt bulbs. It was a piece of cake to pick out what I was focusing on, and get it in focus. Delightful. And this was with the KIT lens!

I'd say already, without any hard testing, that this was well worth the money. Makes low-light photography actually doable by me again.

My original plan was to do some side-by-side comparision shots through the viewfinder, to show differences in brightness and all that. However, the point-n-shoot I was going to use for that ended up not working so well through the viewfinder (poor manual focus ability - the same reason I stopped using it in the first place) so that experiment has been scratched. Oh well!
