Good postcards is an artform IMO.
The key here is the word good.
I always try to view postcards when I'm in an area I'm photographing.
I've seen a lot of cards that were just awful. I remember a shop in the
western part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that had the absolute worst
collection of card images I've ever seen. While carefully inquiring about
the cards to the sales clerk, she sheepishly told me they were all done by
the shops owner. Terrible lighting, poor compositions, terribly old looking
cards, yet there they were for sale.

I bought this magasine regularly while I was living in Ireland. It's
brilliant.
To me it was always a challenge to try to do really nice postcards. It's
actually more difficult than one should think.
It's very hard for an amateur to cope, I believe. It's about being on the
right spot at the right time, bringing the right equipment. About knowing
the location, events, the light at different times etc. Good postcards is
an
artform IMO.
Finding the best pubs is often a rewarding challenge as well :-)

it saves a lot of trouble messing around with cameras, tripods,
imagination,
that sort of thing. Just go to pub first, have a few, and buy the
postcard.

The UK mag, Outdoor Photography, has a feature that
recommends outdoor photo op locations around the UK along
with sample pics from the areas. They give a map segment and
then name the routes to the sites, give subject
recommendations, best time of year and day to shoot, and good
places to stay. All of that is not unusual, but the real
deal maker here
is that they also list the nearest local pubs! Now that is
outstanding!
