Hi, Mafud. I see what you're saying, and I think it's applicable in some
places and in some cases, but not universally. I have personally
witnessed the "nice," friendly competition that you're skeptical of, and
not just in my store. Some people recognize the advantages of working in
a cooperative--not confrontational--manner with their peers. The things
that Bill mentioned, like the sharing of equipment, stories and tips, are
actually very common in such an environment. I've seen this.
Here's my point: I am not arguing either way about how many people do or
do not take this approach. I am not making a statement either way about
how prevalent it is in my, your, or anyone else's local market. All I am
saying is that entering the field with a friendly, cooperative attitude
is preferable, IMO, to going in with a confrontational, me-vs.-them
approach. And the fact that 'everyone' else in the local market seems to
be cutthroat is no reason to be the same yourself. As an analogy, there
are other ways to respond to conflict (say, to someone trying to hit
you) than either hitting back or running away, even if a lot of people
don't realize this. It's amazing how far a little courtest and respect
will take someone.
