In this case I think it did, because it helped preserve detail in the clouds and prevented the rainbow from blowing out too much. Perhaps I got double lucky ;)

Use a polarizing filter?

No filters there... I don't think I've ever used a polarizer with Velvia.

Thanks to all who commented.  I might have a go at printing it tomorrow.
