The day after Christmas, Janie Creba went shopping in downtown Toronto with her mother. A gunfight erupted in broad daylight, right in the middle of Toronto's main shopping area. Janie was killed by a stray bullet. The event galvanized and shocked a city which saw a record number of handgun deaths in 2005. At the place where she was shot, an impromptu shrine was formed by flowers and other gifts, placed there by a grieving community:
