Colour is actually pretty easy, especially C-41.
It can be processed in an inversion tank in a kitchen sink.
E-6 is more involved, but still not difficult. Temperature and time is more
critical.
I've done E-4 and E-6 in the kitchen sink in the past, with good results.
A rotary processor makes things easier.
My understanding of modern colour chemistry is that it is pretty innocuous
compared to some of the houshold cleaners that get poured down the drain,
and chemistry volumes are so low that even a septic field can support the
output of a hobbiest.
