You can register the same trademark as someone else as long as it's not
for competing (or nearly competing) products.


It sometimes depends on the value of the original trademark. The trademark "Jaws" from the movie was so valuable that the courts disallowed Sears from trademarking the name Jaws for a trash compactor.

and it may be that they didn't want to bother risking a problem at all.
Or, of course, they may have thought that "light" something would make for a more appealing product name than "shadow" something -- I would agree with that, personally.
