Nope, the popup flash on the MZ/ZX5[n] is not automatic. You have to
choose when you want to use it. One of the things I like about the camera.

IIRC, the pop-up button used to release the flash, but the flash was too
lazy
to stand up on it's own spring. I ended up having to hold up the flash
w/ a
finger tip after I pressed the button to release it. Has something
changed?
