Ironically, I've just been reading up on this series of printers
(looking at a 1280 myself) and apparently the 1280/1290 does indeed
print darker than the 1270 (And early production 1280's). Looks like you
need a profile, or to adjust via the driver.

Hello all,
just spent 5 minutes in the online Epson suppport chat. What a laugh. If
ever you want to be treated like a complete idiot then this is the place
to go.
Maybe someone here can help. The problem: I've replaced my 1270 with a
1290, installed the Epson driver for the 1290, all other settings
unchanged. Now, when I print from PS - as I've done for years with my
1200 and 1270 - with the correct paper profile selected and the
automatic colour correction in the printer driver disabled my prints
come out way too dark.
I already suspected a hardware or ink problem. But everything works OK
(well, within its limitations) if I print without a profile and have the
automatic printer colour correction enabled.
Any suggestions?
