I'd describe this as a "useful" step up from 6 megapixels if you make
large prints, but not enough to justify a new camera unless there are
other significant advantages as well.
Exactly. 9Mpixel is a improvement over 6Mpixel if you are already
producing prints that stress the resolution limits of the camera ...
ie, prints in the A3 Super and up size range. If your customary print
size is A3 or smaller, the advantages from the increased resolution
considered alone are very small, it comes down to a bit more wiggle
room for cropping.
I've seen this proven over and over again by comparing 8Mpixel vs
6Mpixel captures too.
