The death of flash cards.??
Not likely. Too fragile for serious PJ work, just like Microdrives.
I haven't heard any reports of microdrives being delicate. Have you
experienced many failures?
Not personally as I do not use them. The reason they became popular
initially is they were larger and faster than the available CF cards,
they are now slower and smaller (Although slightly cheaper per meg).
A Flash card can be dropped several feet onto concrete without damage. A
Microdrive will be killed by a much smaller drop more often than not.
They are significantly more fragile than flash. They also draw more power.
These are likely using some of the new 1.8" mechanisms that premiered in
the iPod.
I expect the main reason built-in hard drives would be unsuitable for PJ
work would be the inability to swap cards and have someone working on or
transmitting the first batch while the photographer kept shooting, or
for physically separating different projects or sequences. I wouldn't be
surprised at all to see them showing up in consumer cameras.
They can be made removable. In fact you can use some of them in certain
pre-CF era pro digital cameras, the ones that take PC Card memory, as
these drives are available in PC Card format.
