Hi!
Try as I might (and I ~so~ want to become a techie) I just don't see any
reason to carry around one of those devices for local photography. A few
cards are inexpensive enough, light, easily transportable, and any risk to
one's pix is divided up amongst the cards. While I don't have all the
cards I want yet, I'll probably settle on a mix of a couple-three 512mb
cards and a few 1GB cards plus a nice carrying case for them all
(http://tinyurl.com/9mgtz). Bruce had one of those PD7X-type thingies when
we got together at the last meeting, and i thought it was very cool. Were
I to be travelling, making a long trip, I'd consider one, but I'd probably
not carry it while out shooting. It could stay wherever I took up
residence and I'd DL the cards when I returned from the events of the day.
Of course, having such a device gives pause for thought as to the capacity
needed. Would 80gb be enough for whatever the length of the trip might be?
For the DS that's about 7500 pix in RAW.
Shel, may be I wasn't clear. I did not mean "local" photography when
asking my question. Of course, if I am a short drive away from home at
worst I can unload my cards at home and be back on location if so I must.
PD7X that I have is loaded with "mere" ;-) 12 GB drive - it is order of
25 films worth of RAW files... It should be enough for a trip of two
weeks duration.
I think now I realize that I can put to words the reason I asked my
question.
I think that large capacity cards are not sensible for 6-8 MP cameras.
If need be, one can replace them with several smaller cards and spend
remaining money on lenses :-). Or one can take the PD7X or similar
device if one needs *storage* capacity. Which probably explains why
their prices are rather high. IMHO, the 8 MB cards are targeted to
people who work with MF digital backs or Canon 1DsMkII and alike.
It would seem that those who responded to my question agree on the above
count.
Cheers!
Boris
