Bruce, Thistles have always garnered a short study by me whenever encountered. I've even shot them in combination with other elements a few times. IMO, there is more vertical frame space than needed, especially since the stem is OOF. Also, if cropped to allow the front of the thistle to face into the frame, it would be too tight. As with a portrait, I feel there should be slightly more frame in front than behind. That may be my rule only, but when applied, I've felt more comfortable with the composition.
