Maybe that will change, but, for me, there's nothing that can replace
real
B&W film with the photos printed on silver paper.
I've recently been asked to shoot some B&W work. I use my *stDS these
days, and the conversion to B&W isn't a problem for me at all. In
fact, it should be easier to get many of the tonal effects I want with
a digital system.
However, getting a print that looks like my old selenium toned art
prints is going to be a real challenge. Does anyone know of a way to
get prints made on traditional silver-based B&W paper from my *istDS?
I want the very rich blacks and crisp tonal range of real prints that
have been selenium toned. I either need a way to get a film negative
made from an *istDS image, or find some place that can print onto
actual silver paper for me, so I can tone the prints myself.
Any suggestions?
I'm afraid that I'll probably have to settle for printing them on a
color printer, or color printing service, and forget about the special
appeal of selenium-toned silver images. I guess this is how the
platinum printing guys felt when that style of printing became obsolete.
Hey, since I brought it up, I wonder if any diehard artist has made
platinum B&W prints from their digital SLR? ;)
Dan Burkeholder, maybe -- a few years ago he was teaching a friend of
mine to make platinum prints from images that at some point in the
workflow were digital.
