Hi Scott
I did this same reseach a year ago, for similar reasons. In the end I
choose between the bodies you mentioned.
There are several differences between the ZX5 and 5n but probably the
most important is lack of depth of field preview on the 5. If you
can do without DoF then the 5 is very useable (I have the 5 and find
I don't miss DoF preview as much as I thought I would).
The other notable difference is the lack of exposure lock on the MZ-5.
Makes the spot-meter less usefull...
Z1-p has a faster winder than the Z-1, has 2s mirror prefire, more info in
the viewfinder and a more advanced pop-up flash (with red-eye reducing
preflash), but lacks interval shooting. In the end I decided for a Z-1: I
did not think the Z-1p was worth the extra money (there was a notable
price difference a year ago, IIRC €200,- for a Z-1 versus €350,- for a
Z-1p)...
In the end I had both the Z-1 and the MZ-5n for a while. To summarise: the
MZ-5n is small, solid and 'simple'. The Z-1 is large, heavy and full of
bells and whistles. The control system of the Z-1 (HyP and HyM) is very
good. I just whished it were smaller and lighter...
If you want something really cool, buy the silver (!) Z-5 from KEH. Almost
a Z-1, rather unique, and they don't seem to be able to sell it...
Hope this helps,
