The SpF works pretty much the same way a K1000 works. They are mechanically rugged and reliable. The meters are the weakest link but a talented repair tech can replace the SpF meter with a K1000 meter, from what I've been told. Most are about 40 years old now, so a CLA is probably recommended.

Again me Shel
are there any known faults with the Spotmatic F I should know of or can I
trust my eyes when I see one and it looks good on first sight and when the
usual things like shutter release work ...?
I mean, does one find them in good condition on the second hand market or
would I have to CLA it anyway?

greetings and thanks

The Spotmatic F would be my choice. I believe they both came out
about the
same time, one designed for the other. The F has a built in
meter, although
I think the meter in the ES2 is more sophisticated. However, the camera,
as I understand it, is a bit more troublesome and more difficult
to repair.
Go for the whole experience - get a Spottie F - look for one in black.
Find a thin, leather Spotmatic strap (I think Juan and I may have cornered
the market on those <LOL>) and the older style triangular shape strap
attachments. Oh, yeah, try to find an original lens hood as well. Shoot
with a legend, live the legend.

BTW, I sold my lens, with original caps and hood, for, I believe,
$450.00.

Hi Shel
this was a good reading for me, thanks.
If you had to choose a Spotmatic type to match that lens, which
one would
you prefer and why?
I think the owner used it with a ES 2, I would like to have a build in
meter, I understand that you care
less for that feature...

Hi Markus ...

Way back in the old days, when the SMCT 85/1.8 first arrived on the
scene.
every photog I then knew, regardless of what they were shooting, and
everyone in the camera shops here, were buzzing with
enthusiasm for that
lens. It was, if I may use the term, an instant legend. I
couldn't afford
one then, but there were ample opportunities to use a sample
or two (it
paid to have friends at the camera shops), and I just loved it.
It's still
a very desirable optic, even though in some ways time has passed
it by with
fancier features. But the pics it takes should be just as good
as ever. I
loved mine, especially when used on a nicely brassed, black
Spotmatic F.
Fast forward to the present: I still love the Pentax 85mm
lenses. Just
yesterday I did an informal test comparing the 77mm Ltd to
the K85/1.8.
I
had to look long and hard to find any appreciable difference between
them
under the circumstances of the comparison.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your lens. You'll have not only a great lens,
but a
small piece of Pentax history and legend.

Shel
