1.) If you don't have enough light there are two things that will
happen, One you will be shooting wide open.
Two, you will be using relatively slow shutter speeds. Overriding your
cameras
meter to assure action stopping shutter speeds will not magically make
more. Most
DSLR's don't have ISO ratings any higher than 1600.
2.)Autofocus will fail you at low light levels, the AF in the *ist-D is
adequate down
to about ev3 or so, Pentax only specifies it to work down to ev0,
between ev3 and ev0 you
might as well use manual focus, and that won't be a lot different on any
camera. The
specifications are all pretty much in that area.
The solution to your problem is faster glass, no zoom I know of is
faster than f2.8, you really
need prime lenses in the f2.0-1.2 class, this will give you an extra 1
to 2 1/2 stops to use on shutter
speed. The D20's IS won't help you there, it will stop camera shake but
it won't stop action.
The D20 wouldn't have solved your problem. However if you really want
to unload your junk *ist-D I'm sure someone will give you a couple
hundred dollars for it, as it's such a lousy camera.

I tried to take some photos at a show with my "kit" lens and figured

I had exactly the same problem on the weekend trying to photograph
dancers in a hall lit only with spots.
I wasn't allowed to use flash, so had to use 1600 ISO, keep my
2.8 Sigma 70 -200 wide open, and override the shutter to read
1/250th to try and stop movement.
What a joke...I took over 1000 exposures and 99% are complete junk.
The auto focus on the *IstD is hopelessly inadequate for this kind of
low light work.
I lost a lot of money on this shoot, so I'm looking to buy a camera that
will do
the job...possibly a Canon D20.
Any advise out there welcomed.
