I don't know why either (for sure) but I suspect that it was a cost cutting
move. Electronic operation of the aperture means that that manufacturer no
longer has to build the mechanisms into the lens that communicate the
aperture setting to the camera.
 It also seemingly eliminates an entry point for dust, moisture etc. If it
makes the lenses cheaper to manufacture then Pentax will have to follow suit
to compete. I've used a Canon camera and lenses and I didn't miss the
aperture ring at all. The thumb wheel on the back of the camera was quite
easy to manage.

I wouldn't miss it either as long as there's some other way to set the
aperture.
