Continuos locking up of the camera. Only removing the batteries and restarting
it would bring it back to life.
Another was returned for random crashes and was unable to update firmware.

Are you positive they weren't battery related failures?
My istD would do the old lock out thing regularly when the batteries got a bit weak, especially if I was using the external battery. It's one of the reasons why I gave up in NiMh batteries, I just didn't find that they ran the camer reliably. I just find it really odd that you would get 3 camera back to back, all with similar problems.

As an anecdote, a photographer I know was working on a coffe table book project, using Pentax SLR equipment (ME-Super and some sort of PZ thing), and also a Mamiya 6. All three of her cameras had metering problems, and her exposures were all over the place.
So, she sent them off for repair duiring a hiatus from travelling.
All came back listed as working within normal tolerances.
In this case, the photographer couldn't run a light meter to save her life, but wouldn't admit it. It had to be the equipment.

No personal slights intended, it's just unlikely that one person would have 3 defective samples of the same product.
