To detect problems with lenses sometimes you have to look through them
at a variety of angles, with the incoming light at a variety of angles
too. Look from the rear to the front.
I recently bought (and returned) an F* 300 f4.5 that appeared fine
looking straight through. If one looked through from rear to front with
a light source just outside the image circle, it was apparent that the
rear element was covered in some kind of residue which appeared as small
clumps.
This is a pretty good lens for the price. Everyone else reports
satisfaction with it. New ones are available on eBay for only a few tens
of dollars more than you paid for the used one.
