I bought S40's for my kids last Christmas. (What a grandfather will do
to get pictures of the grandkids!)

The cameras work well and I am being supplied with lots of photos. 
The camera is well suited to their needs.  Lithium AA's last a long
time.  Photos are relatively well exposed in the Automatic mode, which
they all use 99% of the time.  It survives being carried in jeans
pockets and diaper bags.

Probably not for the person that wants to shoot with manual focus or
exposure.  It does, however, have an EV compensation function, so you
can override a couple of stops (I think) in each direction.

So, if the price is right and the feature set is right, I wouldn't
have any regrets.
