your camera uses Li-Ion batteries. there is a computer in the charger and in 
the batteries to prevent overcharging. that is part of why the batteries 
cost so much.

Hmmm, I leave the charger on my Canon batteries on a long time. For hours,
usually longer than it takes to actually charge them. Go away, busy, etc.
