Actually they did, they built a prototype using the Honeywell autofocus system IIRC. It should have worked on any K mount body.

Do you mean the SMC Pentax AF35-70/2.8? It didn't have the autofocus sensor built-in, only the motor. It needed to be mated to the Pentax ME-F body to autofocus. Pentax have never made a lens with an entire AF system inside it.
