This seems to be the failure mode for this lens: A cast metal tab that transmits the rotational force form the zoom ring to the inner workings of the lens has pulled out. One or both the screws that hold it in have pulled out of their moorings, so to speak. A pair of slightly longer screws and some epoxy will take care of things unless the bits floating around inside the lens have caused additional damage. If you have a go at it yourself, the FIRST step in disassembly is peeling off the rubber grip around the zoom ring and removing the metal brushes that carry electrical signals to the innards of the lens.
