For waving at/by kids it's fine. There are 4 levels of video camera, price-wise. 1. Cheap and cheerful for the kids. 2. Sony PD-170 or equivalent. 3. Used broadcast standard (DVcam/DVCPro/Beta/etc) 4. New broadcast standard (DVcam/DVCPro/Beta/etc) The more you get towards number 4, the more you'll spend on accessories, so double any camera-only amount!
