I have used a short piece snipped off of a square cross section elastic band for a spring. Cheap, easy to adjust, works well and one band should give a life time supply. The only negative I can see is the possibility of the rubber degrading over time. Perhaps an O-ring would be a better choice for spring rubber. And round too!
